Hello everyone,
I am in a bit of a quandary about this palce called Zella in Germany , I have looked on
http://gov.genealogy.net/gov and found that there are no less than 10 places with Zella as part of the name but now with places which are JUST called Zella there are 5 which are........
Zella parish Ziegenhain, Hersfeld, Evangelische Kirche von Kurhessen-Waldeck
Zella church Zella, Ziegenhain, Hersfeld, Evangelische Kirche von Kurhessen-Waldeck
Zella Ort Thringen, Bundesrepublik Deutschland
Zella Ort Schwalm-Eder-Kreis, Kassel, Hessen, Bundesrepublik Deutschland 34628
Zella Gemeinde Dermbach, Wartburgkreis, Thringen, Bundesrepublik Deutschland
now I ask you which of these Zella towns would have been classed as being in Prussia in or around 1730 ?
Thank you,
MaryJane .Suffolk UK.

Hello MaryJane,
really that are only three ZELLA towns, because parish and church are no towns. But none of them were in Prussia around 1730. I think there is no other ZELLA in Prussia at that time. Sorry!

Hello Wilfried,
Thank you for your reply . What if if the place was called ZELLE PRUSSIA ??
MaryJane.
Mary Jane,
If you got the information about Zelle Prussia from a US Census return, you
should be aware that starting about 1870 anyone with origins in any German
principality was recorded by most of the census enumerators as being from
"Prussia",then sometime later as "Germany", regardless of the actual name of
the place of origin at the time of birth/departure.

Hello MaryJane,
same result. There is no CELLE, ZELLE, ZELLA or ZELL in the Prussia of 1730. Other similar spellings do not exist anywhere in Germany.

Thüringen im 19. Jahrhundert
That's very true. Except in some cases. Some enumerators were
very particular, for their own reasons perhaps, to list the principality
or kingdom. I have found many in Hudson County, NJ, for instance,
in the 1870 federal census listing Hannover, Wurtemburg, Bavaria,
etc.
What the enumerators were told to do and what they wanted to do
were sometimes at odds, perhaps. Or an individual regional manager
thought it was important to list and gave directions to ask.
States and localities were also permitted to ask or not ask some
questions that were locally important.
