Hello List Members
I am researching my wife's family and cannot deternine what port they
emigrated from or the name of the ship. We have not been able to find them
in the United States. We believe they came into Texas by way of Mexico in
the 1852-1854 time period. Unfortunately, no immigration records were kept by
Mexico during that time.
Does anyone know of any other ports where they might have emigrated,
other than Hamburg or Bremen?
What I do know is that the family consisted of Johann Michael
Moegelin, his wife Henriette, their three sons - Friedrich Wilhelm, Carl
Ludwig and August Heinrich and two daughters - Amalie Mathilda and Emma
Therese Moegelin. I also know that the father and at least one of the sons
were ship captains on the Baltic Sea and that several of the children were
born at Landsberg on the Warthe (Bromberg Stadt), now located in Poland.
They emigrated before the three sons were drafted into the Prussian
Army so I am wondering if they might have emigrated under false names. I
also wonder if, since they had some knowledge of ships and the sea, they
might have emigrated as members of the crew of some ship (either an emigrant
or a cargo ship). Also, Friedrich Wilhelm Moegelin married Caroline (Welk or
Welsch?) soon after they settled in Texas. Family stories tell us that she
was coming to Texas to marry someone else but she met Friedrich on the voyage
to America and he convinced her to marry him.
Does anyone have any other clues or know of any other places I could
search to try and find the name of the ship on which they immigrated.
Also, I would like to learn more about the origin of the village of
Mogelin (umlaut over the o) in Germany.
Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Hello Carroll,
via Hamburg was also a indirect Emmigration:
Hamburg - Hull with a steamer -about 36 hours-
Hull - Liverpol with the train
Liverpool - Northamerika Sailship 6 weeks
1886 was the lowes rate indirect 36 Marks, direct 90 Marks, the years before the
differece was not so big, because they had to pay indirect still for food and
sleeping to Liverpool.
Greetings from Hamburg
