Hello James,

Do you know the places where the Westhusen lived in Hannover?
The three places Schieben, Hohenlangenbeck and Ldelsen are today in
Sachsen-Anhalt. Between 1816 and 1947 they were in the prussian province Saxony.

I was wondering if there is a good place to get old German maps? My
ancestors left in 1863, so I would like to have some maps that are older
than 1863 to determine how the Land and Kreis changes will affect my
research.

I also would like some maps that tell one which villages / towns make up the
different Kreis. I am specifically interested in what is now called
Niedersachsen.

Also, does anyone have a time table that explains when Hanover was split up
into separate Kreis and Niedersachsen.

I hope I have the terminolgy correct, I know enough to be dangerous.

Dear Mrs. Hillmer,

Just type: www.lgn.de

and you get the Niedersachsen state survey who also trade in historical maps.

The Kreise were set up in 1885. Until then it was Amt, plural "Aemter"

It was Provinz Hannover until 1934. Then they made several "Gau, Gaue" out of
it,
e. g. Weser-Ems from Osnabrueck to the north western coast through Bremen,
east of that it was Suedhannover-Braunschweig etc.
Niedersachsen as a state was formed in 1946 including the

former (1866-1934) Prussian Provinz Hannover
Land (1918-1934) Braunschweig,
(1918-1934) Land Oldenburg
and
(1918-1934) Land Schaumburg-Lippe

Sincere greetings
