Town of Brier

Help, I am looking for additional information on my grandfather Ernest August Bartling. He was born 2 Feb 1884. Came to the United States 1 Sept 1911.

I found the passenger list when he arrived in the United States. It lists the place that he is from as Brier, Hannover, Germany. I have tried to find information on this place but to no avail. His father was listed as William Bartling.

The passenger list also lists his final destination as Toledo, Ohio and that he was going to join a friend "Schmidt" in Bowling Green, Ohio, but he ended up in Detroit, Michigan. Why, I don't know.

I would appreciate any information that can be provided.

Dear Lori Heikkinen,
there really doesn't seem to be a place named Brier. Did you read the ship list
yourself from the original or is there possibly an reading error ? I list up the
places where I foung living BARTLING of this time starting with "BR":
- Bremen
- Braunschweig
- Brake
only with "B" and living BARTLING
- Bnde
- Bevensen (now with addition BAD)

Bevensen and Braunschweig are to long, if Brier is no shortening, Bremen always
has been a Freie Hansestadt, menas hasn't been integrated to kingdom of Hannover.
Bnde has almost same length, but should already belong to Westfalia and inspie
of being nearby, also did not belong to kingdom of Hannover. By that remains
Brake a.d. Unterweser with 5 different BARTLINGS. There is another Brake as part
of Mellinghausen near Sulingen, but with no Bartling families.

Next possibility: More of the Brier writing is right. In this case we have to
take into consideration, because of lyinng in the region or kingdom Hannover:
- 39524 Briest b. Schnhausen / Elbe
- 39517 Briest b. Tangerhtte
- 29413 Brietz

Because of coincidence of now living BARTLING and same length of town name and
same beginning, I would say you have best chances in trying to ask the
- Einwohnermeldeamt Brake
  Schrabberdeich 1
  26919 Brake
  Tel.04401-102-0

if Ernst August Bartling was born there on 2.Febr.1884.

If not, there are the other place possibilities to go through that way. Another
possibilizy might be to go to the original ship list document and try another
reading.

With kind regards Hans Peter Albers

Hi Lori,
You present a real challenge here. I have a very detailed autoatlas
for Germany and I cannot find anything like Brier as a town. Now, there
are some towns so small that they are not listed in the index but are
actually on the map somewhere but one has to have some reference point from
which to start a search.
Did you actually see the passenger list? If not, I would think it
would be a good idea to see the name of the birthplace yourself.
Do you know the approximate birthdate of the father William Bartling?
I would guess that you have used the LDS website. I looked there at all the
William Bartlings and their birthplaces. There is one who was born in 1839
in Altenbruch. Could that be him? If that would be the right one
(age-wise), you can find some Altenbruch records filmed by the LDS. What was
his wife's name?
Did this family stay in Michigan? Be sure to check all the
records/archives from there (MIGenWeb - Free Genealogy created by Volunteers).
I wish you luck and I'll keep the name in mind for further exploration,
Barbara Stewart
