Heiko,
There's a site that used to be called 1837online.com and is now
findmypast.com that has the indexes from all vital records from the UK from 1837
forward. I was able to find Catharine listed but not Mr. Stege, so I guess it's
just a one sided index. She was listed as Catharine Bridget Lawrence so it was
pretty obvious. If she had just been listed as Catharine Lawrence it might
have been different. The year was in the right time frame. Then I found a
site with volunteers from Isle of Wight and one of them confirmed that the
groom is J. H. Stege. So, it was them and I've sent for the marriage record.
We'll see what that brings. Without you, though, none of this would have
happened. ![]()
Well, I do envy you somewhat your place of residence. One of these days
I'll get to Germany. Until then, I'll just keep plugging along finding what I
can. But, I can't wait to be able to go.

Hello,
how on earth did you find the marriage in England ? When you get closer
information would you mind passing that on to me ? So I can store it for our
genealogical soc., just in case someone might need it.
A day laborer back then was quite a normal appearance. he quite surely was
not rich, but he probably was employed rather continually, especially in a
seafaring town - there was always work to do. And the word "fish merchant" does
leave room for interpretation. Of course he may also have made his luck in
the States - a lot of people did.
I do not live in Elsfleth, but in Oldenburg. That's only 10 miles from
Elsfleth proper - and only 2 miles from the city line. But I usually do my
research at the Oldenburg State Archives that has copies of most of the records from
Oldenburg state (duchy) from 1800 on.
Have a great week

Heiko,
Thank you for your help. The Stege family once they arrived here were
listed as fish merchants, so there was some kind of sailing, shipping type company
that they were involved in. They were rather well-to-do here so a day
laborer was kind of a surprise. Maybe it's just the time change but a day laborer
sounds like someone who didn't have a regular job. Makes me wonder.
I was able to find a marriage record for them in England on Isle of Wight
way at the top of the island near a town named Cowes. Hopefully I will have a
copy of that in a few weeks.
Do you actually live in Elsfleth that you have access to the records?
