Schrewischken, can't locate town

I thought my ancestor, born in 1864, was born in Gumbinnen (renamed Gusev),
near Koenigsburg (Kaliningrad), Kreis Goldap, E. Prussia (now Russia).

I obtained the Ellis Island ship manifest which is typewritten. She arrived
in 1924, and she gave her birth place as Schrewischken, Germany.

I have used JewishGen Gazetteer and also
http://www.expedia.com then chose maps.

I cannot find Schrewischken. Maybe it is a small town near Gumbinnen
(Gusev).

Can you think of other spellings I can try? Thank you. Zelda Dubel.

Thomas Salein's Ortsnamenliste has a SCHERREWISCHKEN, renamed BRUDERHOF in
1938, renamed MALOE PUTJATINO after the war., Regierungsbezirk Gumbinnen,
Landkreis Angerapp (Darkehmen). Shtetlseeker can't find any of these. It's
about 9 kilometers north of Angerapp along the railway line to Insterburg.

Zelda!

Well, how about Scherrewischken ? A village of 155 inhabitants (1939), which on 16.7. 1938 was renamed Bruderhof . Situated in county Angerapp, it belonged to the church Ballethen

Now, where the h... is Angerapp ? Since you talked about Insterburg and Gumbinnen and Goldap, I assume that you have a general idea ? The county Angerapp is South of the county Gumbinnen, Southeast of the County Insterburg and West of the county Goldap. The traditional name (up to 1938 was Darkehmen (but we try to keep our secrets secret <sm>)

So how to get to Scherrewischken ?

Go to Gumbinnen, leave the city (after a thorough sightseeing tour!) on the Main Street (Koenigstrasse) to the South-West. Carry on till you reach a) the end of the street, b) a mountain-area (No not as high as the Alps, but about 500 feet (148m). They called it Drachenberg (dragon´s Mountain) Take the road to the right (back to East of Insterburg) It was the old Reichsstrasse 137 (It leads to Darkehmen, if you took the LEFT turn). The road crosses the ridge and on the other site you are already in Bruderhof. Since the Russian´s also like to keep a secret Secret, they have put up a sign calling it Maloe Putjatino

Well, enjoy your trip, don´t forget the snow-shoes (if you are leaving in late November/December) and remember the natives are friendly (apart from the odd wolves)

Ernst

Hallo!

Geheimarchiv preuss. Kulturbesitz und Berlin (Standesamt I) wurden auch
diesbezueglich angeschrieben.

Vielen Dank,

Martina
