Hi Richard:
I am familiar with Omaha. I grew up in western Iowa and did some
grad work at Omaha U. Does that date me?
First the name(s) of Ruether/Ruther. The name Ruther probably had an
unlaut over the u. ü = ue. Best to look for both, excuse me, all
three spellings. Ruether, Ruther and Rüther.
In German records, the Rüther will be the most common. In the
states it will probably be Ruether and sometimes Ruther. My name
Bösche is now Bosche. The umlaut was dropped, but the e is used
only in some older U.S. Records. That shows that there are always
exceptions.
Rhede and Aschendorf are both west of Oldenburg. Normally I would
say that the Neurhede is New Rhede, but I could'nt find one in the are
(dosen't mean there isn't one), but there is a Nährende in the
area. They are all very close together.
I couldn't find much online at the Family History Centers, but you
might want to stop by your local one at:

Hello Gale and Richard,
I'm from Omaha as well. I lived there for several years. My sister lives
across the street from the LDS center on Martha St. She volunteered there
for years. However, there has been a change there insofar that they no
longer have the office where you can order films.
Here is a suggestion where you will find some Ruether families near
Rhede. http://meta.genealogy.net/
You can search by name or town/city. Neurhede is right on the border
with the Netherlands. Aschendorf and Rhede are near each other. There are
many Rüthers listed, but may be later than what could be helpful for you.
There's a Gerhard Rüther listed in Neurhede with the birth date of Jan 26
1823. There is a name listed there with this address:
berndjosefjansef@freenet.de
He may be able to help you.
I'll do some hunting as well. I have family that came from the Emsland
area and I might be able to find something helpful. There are no fees for
any help on this list!
