I am searching for information on my great, great grandfather Jacob Richards ( could be Yacob Rickert) born about 1800 in Hanover, Germany and his wife Margaret Buck or Book born 1802. They married, and had children Jacob born 1825, and Margaret born 1827, Other children were Jonas and Catherine whom I believe were born in Ontario, Canada after they immigrated. Jacob Richards petitioned for a land grant in Ontario on 05 Jan 1832, and was described as a discharged seaman from the Royal Navy. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. Geraldine Richards, Welland, Ontario, Canada.
Hello Geraldine,
I have Books in my family. There were from the Haselünne and Lathen
areas. Are your people Catholic? Mine were -- so that would narrow it down
somewhat.
I trust you have looked in the LDS website (www.familysearch.org).
Also try http://www.gendex.com:8080/ There are many Rickerts there.
Good luck,
Barbara
Thank you so much Barbara for your immediate response. No my Book/Bucks were
Mennonite so I guess that rules out a connection. Have tried
familysearch.org but will try the other webstite you mentioned. Much luck
in your research as well. Geraldine.
Hello again,
I found reference to this book that I thought you might be able to use.
Perhaps you have seen it, but it does list some towns where the Mennonites
lived in Germany:
AMISH MENNONITES IN GERMANY: Their Congregations, The Estates Where They
Lived, Their Families
By Hermann Guth
Book. 1995, cloth, 51/2 x 81/2, index, illus., 380 pp, ISBN 1-883294-23-1
[#6831MP]
Appleton's Price: $19.50.
This amazing collection of data, assembled in a meaningful format on the
Amish Mennonites in Germany, is much more than just names and dates. Guth
combines a massive array of details accumulated from European archives and
other sources to assemble a unique portrait of families which populated the
18th- and 19th-century Amish congregations. Glossaries include ranslations
of original documents as well as a delightful photo essay of the estates
where these families lived and the congregations where they worshipped:
Darmstadt, Durlach, Fr²nsburg, Hochburg, Hoffsttten, Nassau-Weilburg, Lower
Palatinate, Upper Palatinate, Waldeck, and Zweibr?cken.
Geraldine,
Since Jacob served in the Royal Navy, you might want to consider hiring David Seeney in England who specializes in research in British military records:
David L. Seeney, sunsetmilitaria@btinternet.com
His rates are pretty reasonable, and he comes highly recommended. The service papers may provide more info on the origins of Jacob.
Just a thought!
