Dear Carol,
Thank you for your interesting email. My Gottschalks were from either
the Uckermark or Mecklenburg, depending on where the borders were at
the particular time.
The oldest Gottschalk I have on my family tree is as follows:-
GEORG MICHAEL FRIEDRICH GOTTSCHALK born circa 1766 in
Fredenwalde Uckermark/Mecklenburg
Died circa 1796 also in Fredenwalde
He married
FRIEDERIKE WAGENKNECHT in 1786
We know of at least 2 children from this marriage.
These were:-
(1) MARIE CHRISTINE GOTTSCHALK born circa 1792 died 1856 in
Stegelitz Uckermark/Mecklenburg
She married ADAM STUHMER and one of their sons was a MARTIN
FRIEDRICH STUMER , my Great Great Grandfather who emigrated to
Australia.
She had a total of 8 children that we know of.
(2) HANA CHARLOTTE GOTTSCHALK
Unfortunately we know nothing further on this child.
Now for my SCHROEDER connections.
It would appear that the surname
SCHROEDER/SCHRODTER/SCHROEDTER and other variants is as
common in Germany as the English name Smith is here in Australia.
I have SCHROETER relations from the German states of West Prussia,
Mecklenburg , Brandenburg as well as from Hanover.
There are really too many to detail in this email. I also think I have found
a possible link between my Mecklenburg SCHROETERS and my
Brandenburg SCHRODERS, but I will need to research this more to prove
it.
I am going to Germany on a holiday next year and maybe if I can find out
exactly where the old records are for Brandenburg as well as
Mecklenburg in Germany , then maybe I will be able to prove this theory.
I would be very interested to see more of your Gottschalk and Schroeder
families so are you able to make up a GEDCOM or an RTF file and email
them? If you are interested in any detailed information of my
Schroedter's let me know.
Once again great to hear from you and I look forward to hearing from you
again
Regards
Noel Bergman
