Helen,
The term in German "Evangelisch" refers to the Lutheran church in Germany,
and the term was used by the Lutheran Church to identify itself in the
German States for at least the last 150 or more years per my genealogical
research. My Webster's New World Dictionary translates Evangelisch as
"Protestant". The other Protestant church in the German States was and is
the "Reformed" which I understand became the Church of Christ in the U.S.
