RE: Germany states/cities/towns

Could someone tell me how Germany is divided? Does Germany have states then
counties then cities/towns--like the United States. If my relatives are
from Emden--is that the city??? And if so, what state is it in or what
county, or whatever???

Cheryl,
Here is a good website that will tell you that.

Dear Mrs. Kraft,

Emden is a city, several church parishes, an Amt (district administration) and a
Kreis. The Kreis consisted of the cities Emden and Norden plus the Amt Emden and
Norden. Emden has a catholic congregation, a lutheran one, one of the Mennonites
(Amish), and a reformed one, and there should be a Jewish one as well.
(1823/1874 directories)
The Amt Emden was subdivided into two Amtsvogtei (Wolthusen and Larrelt).
The Amtsvogtei Wolthusen was subdivided into Untervogtei Oldersum and Jarssum,
the Amtsvogtei Larrelt split up into Untervogtei Larrelt, Loquard and Hinte.

The recruits (at 20 years) were enrolled with the 10th infantry regiments
Ostfriesland, 1st bataillon
the tax districts within the Amt Emden were:
Oldersum
Petkum
Uphusen
Hinte
Larrelt
Rysum

There was a city court and a Amts-Gericht (district court) in Emden.

I guess you do not refer to the city of today 2002 ?
If that were so, you should look for the city website.

Sincerely yours
