Questions regarding locations and occupations Böhne

Dear List Members,

Can someone help me with these questions?

1. LOCATIONS: Was Gesmold (a town? area?) and was it near the Ort of Ostercappeln in the 1830's?

2. HISTORY: Looking for the history of Ostercappeln/the Arenshorst Estate/Kingdom of Hanover? (My Böhne, van der Haar, Remmert, Schlüter, and Wahrhus people came from Ostercappeln and the Arenshorst Estate area.) And by that I mean, were any of those areas ever part of Prussia or any other country? Was this a major area of wars in Napoleon's time? Religion of the area? Just anything or any reference that would help me better understand the history of the area of Hannover--Ostercappeln and Arenshorst. I want to get any references that I can--books, articles, and so forth in English that would help me experience what it was like in that area from 1600-1900. Online information--including the maps of the area during different times would be terrific. I'm just starting with this, so nothing is too small for me to learn.

3. EMIGRATION: I have found a great website regarding emigration from Hannover that covers Osnabrück, Hannover, and Wolfenbüttel (Die Niedersächsischen Staatsarchive)--I can find my Böhne names--with and without the umlaut in several places--and then by clicking on the numbers, it takes me to further specifics. I believe it's giving specifics of the locations, and the numbers mean something important. I can't understand anything except how to search for names, but maybe some kind soul out there can tell me how to interpret or how to write to get information.

4. I believe I have found the ship's passenger list that my gr. gr. Uncle (Herman Heinrich Böhne/Boehne--born Jan 13, 1806--Ostercappeln) came BACK to the USA after visiting Germany. (BARK ELIZA THORNTON--Bremen to New Orleans October 30, 1845--District of Mississippi--Port of New Orleans. He's listed as Hern. H. Bohne--citizen of the United States) Does anyone know where I would look to find the ships that WENT to Germany in the 1840s --1880's? I can't seem to find ships that went over to Germany--I can only find some that were coming TO the USA.)

I know this is a great deal to ask, but maybe I will get lucky! Thanks in advance to any of you kind enough to help me! I truly wish I had taken German in school! Little did I know how valuable it would be to me later in life. I have learned so much from this list in the last months, and am so grateful for the help I have received from you "pros"!

If you want to email me directly with any information regarding any of my questions, please feel free: lobo1995@msn.com

Many thanks!

Hello,
Here are some directions I had from some time ago:

You can go to this website which allows you to search for persons who
got permission to emigrate from 3 places: Hannover, Osnabruck, and
Wolfbuttel.
       http://app.staatsarchive.niedersachsen.de/findbuch/

On that page, if you want Hannover, it is already situated on the right
choice, so click on Abschicken. (Or click on it and change it to Osnabruck
or Wolfbuttel.) Then, on the next page go to Index. Next, fill in the box
with the surname of the person and choose Nach personen. Then click on
suche. It will give the names of all the emigrants by that name.
If you are in the Hannover by clicking a name it will include the town
or origin. The Osnabruck is a little tougher. See the number(s) on the end
of the line with the names. Take down the number and go back to the previous
page and click on Gliederung. That will give you the names of the towns in
the Osnabruck database. The numbers each one covers start with 1 and get
progrsssivelyn larger as you get to the bottom of the list. So far I don't
know any better way to match the number and the person and the town.
Supposedly, you can order copies of the records for a fee, but I am not
sure where that is
on that site. I wrote an email to the Osnabruck address some time ago and
they did answer my letter. The webpage for the archives (all 3) is this:

      http://www.staatsarchive.niedersachsen.de/home/

Then you can find each of the email address for each of the areas,
Osnabruck, Hannover, and Wolfbuttel. If you choose not to write, you might
at least get some idea where you might look locate the birthplace of your
ancestors. Some people on the list have written hping that they will get an
explanation of the ordering process.

If you find that you want to order records, I have a couple letters from
people who have ordered records and I can send them to you.

Good luck,
Barbara Stewart

Hello again,

Gesmold is southeast of Osnabruck, very near Melle on E 30.
Ostercappeln (and Arenshorst) are very near one another and are northeast of
Osnabruck. All in the same general area. You can go to www.mapquest.com and
go to Maps and enter each town. I wouldn't be surprised if Arenshorst which
is very small is not listed, but may show up on the map--it is on 51 very
near Bohmte (to the south west).

If you'd like I can scan in the map from my autoatlas--the towns are
all on the same page. It may be nicer that way to see them all together.
Let me know.

If you do a search for Ostercappeln on Google.com it will show a number
of items. There is a website for Ostercappeln (where there is some
historical material, but it would be better for you to access by using
Google, because you can ask for it to be translated for you.

Barbara

Would you kindly include the URL for the great website you mentioned in your item nr. 3.

Vielen Dank,
