Place Name in Germany

Hello,

According to the Family History that I have my great grandmother on my mother's side of the family was born in

Retzerow by Staden Hagen, Mackelnburg Schrenrien, Germany

her name was

Carolina Zanzig and she was born 11 July 1852.

At the time (1988) I am sure that the information was not confirmed but was just the collective memories of the committee members that compiled the Family History. I have been unable to find a town/village called Retzerow in Mackelnburg. From the research that I have done on the web the "best" match I have made is

Retschow is a community in the district Rostock in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Germany). The place name is derived from the Slavic word rez = rye. Thus became from Rezhecow - Retschow. To Retschow the communities Fulgenkoppel, glass Hagen and Stlow belong.

Please forgive the rather inelegant translation.

I have been able to translate "Hagen" to mean grove or hedge. When I look at the area around Retschow on Google Earth it looks like there may be a forest to the north. But I have not been able to translate Staden or Glashagen.

This information about Retschow came from Wikipedia. Can anyone on the list provide some insight into this place name.

I am also wondering when documenting place names in Germany is it acceptable to document the place names at the time of the birth and death of the ancestor and also the place names used today (2014)?

Thank you for any assistance or insights you may be able to provide.

David Stuhr

Hello David,
according to your e-mail I believe that the village ist Ritzerow near Stavenhagen, not Retschow near Rostock.

Hi David,
I also think it is
RITZEROW near Stavenhagen, Mecklenburg-Schwerin.
The records are filmed by the Mormons. They are added to the church records
of Stavenhagen.

Hello David,
concerning your second question:
The way of spelling family and location names changed a lot, even during the 20th century. To be able to identify a location you should document the correct spelling of today (sometimes a place became part of another village or city and the old name is not even used any more) with a hint to former ways of spelling.
In your case you can write (probably, until proven) Ritzerow near Stavenhagen, with a hint to Retzerow. I think Staden Hagen was misread like Mackelnburg for Mecklenburg.

Regards,
Anne
