Hello,
Can someone explain something to me? I have been informed that some children were given the last name of the mother instead of the childs father. How does that work and how would you begin to research your family that way?
Debbie
I understand that when their farm came down from the wife's family, her
husband would sometimes take the wife's name and pass that name on to their
children.

Hello Debbie,
I dont know which case you just mean, but in some northern German regions,
namely in the earldoms (or counties) Hoya and Diepholz (south of Bremen) when
men married the female heir of a farm they adopted her name and, consequently,
the children, too. This fact makes tracing the people a bit difficult. In some
cases the records also mention the husbands "maiden name", but in most cases it
is not mentioned after the marriage any more.
I hope I could help you a bit.
Best regards,
Juergen
