Namen, nach denen ich forsche

The surname of my grandfather was WENDT and the surname of his wife was
TAPPE. They came to America in the mid 1800's. I noticed these names on this
list and wonder if there was any informaiton on them. They came from some town
in the Kingdom of Hannover. His name was August Wendt and his father was
Henry Wendt. Any help would be highly appreciated.

Hi WBL:

No Wendt information - but just in case you are not already aware - most of
all "Germans" coming to America in those years (1854 was the highest in
numbers) came thru the port of New Orleans. And, 3/4 of those arrivals came
to/thru St. Louis. Farmers going to central or southern Illinois certainly
would have come thru St. Louis. St. Louis was really, "The Gateway to the
West" as you've heard (to the East and North [Iowa] too). During much of
the early thru mid-50s, St. Louis had more immigrant arrivals than did NYC -
one day was reportedly 6,000 new faces!

Interestingly, many of those who came to St. Louis found that they could not
afford to leave. Some, the familiar poor who didn't have money or lost a
wife or husband - but, many farmer-want-to-be's found that if they possessed
any trade skills (as most had), they could expect good pay and an easier
lifestyle - and decided to stay in St. Louis - never seeing a farm again.

Of the declared states from Germany (in other words, when these peoples
declared their actual States/Kingdoms/Duchies, etc., rather than 'Germany' -
which didn't exist until 1871) the highest numbers were those from
Hannover - in St. Louis - more than Prussia.

A distant second place for arrival was NYC - especially for those going to
the Upper Midwest,
esp., Wisconsin (Milwaukee), Illinois (Chicago area) and Minnesota.

Cincinnati got it's share from N.O., but was more of an established
city/area by then.

I'm sending this to the St. Louis genealogical lists to see if they can help
you from this side of the ocean. There is also an excellent New Orleans
genealogical list that has recorded many of the arrivals to it's Port.

Good hunting

The name Tappe frequently occurs in my family tree. This Tappe family comes
from a small village named Engter, 20 km North of the city Osnabruck.

If anybody would have any information about the RENZENBRINK name - in
Germany or in the USA - your input would be greatly appreciated.
