My Grt-Grandfather born 1842 Cloppenburg Oldenburg Germany

Hello Mary,

Mrs. von Hammel couldn`t find your ancestor in the parish records of Krapendorf (= Cloppenburg). Maybe your information mean the "Amt Cloppenburg" which means the region around Cloppenburg. But it also could be that Cloppenburg only was the last place of residence and not the place of his birth. Eventually another collegue of mine have informations about him.

Best regards,

Gunter

Hello Gunter,

I can only go by what was indicated on the passenger manifests and census
records. On Hermann Georg Diedrich Stahmer's 1st voyage aboard the "Amaranth"
[Bremen to NY] arrival 18 Jan 1865, it listed that he was from Cloppenburg; on
his 2nd voyage aboard the "Dorrette" [Bremen to New Orleans] arrival 21 Oct
1867, it listed that he was from 'Aldenburg'. We assumed that meant Oldenburg.

I hold out hope that some records can be found regarding this Stahmer family to
which my Grt-Grandfather belonged.

Sincere thanks for your effort,

Mary

Hello Mary,

I checked the German phone directory via GEOGEN:
http://christoph.stoepel.net/geogen/v3/

this map shows not any Stahmer addresses in Cloppenburg county, but it shows an concentration just to north in Ammerland county and Oldenburg city.
Ammerland ist a part of the former Dukedom Oldenburg and mainly lutherans like Oldenburg city. Cloppenburg is an mainly catholic area. Therefore I assume, he is lutheran from Ammerland and lived for a while in Cloppenburg, before he emigrated.

The problem is, by LDS you can find only the catholic church books of the Oldenburg province, but not the lutherans.
The lutheran church books are archived at the Statesarchive in Oldenburg.

Sorry,

Werner,

Yes, I was told by a professional genealogist in Salt Lake, that only Catholic
records were available at the library there. Further, I learned in a German
Record Seminar how difficult it is to gain access to records in Germany. One
must make an appointment - in many cases 6 months or more in advance, for a very
specific short period of search time. It was very discouraging.

Thank you for checking,

Mary.
