I would appreciate any help or suggestions anyone can offer.
I am trying to find documentation for a marriage between Johann Hinrich Uchtmann (born at Willenborg in Brockdorf-Lohne) and Catharina Elisabeth Arlinghaus (born at Bramlage in Brockdorf-Lohne). My questions:
1. Can someone pls. help me understand the localities. Is Brockdorf just a "neighborhood" of the city/village of Lohne? I know from a birth certificate I have that Willenborg was translated as "a large farm." What is Bramlage??
2. If these are different localities (villages), where would the marriage have been likely to take place? I could not find the marriage record I was looking for on a Church of the Latter Day Saints' tape that contained Lohne marriages from 1911-1848. The marriage might have been in 1849 or 1850, since the first child I could find of these parents was born in 1851. Any idea where else I can look for the marriage?
3. Johann Hinrich is listed on the Lohne Parish Birth Records as the parent for 5 children. I am having trouble determining if the mother is only one person, since she is referred to as Catharina Elisabeth Arlinghaus on two records, Maria Elisabeth Arlinghaus on 2 records, and just Elisabeth Arlinghaus on the last birth record.
There were 2 Arlinghaus women -- one was named Anna Catherina Margaretha, and one was named Catharina Elisabeth.
Should I conclude that the 5 children all have the same mother -- Catharina Elisabeth??? I don't know where the "Maria" came from.
Thanks.
Kathy
I might be able to help you with two questions. My guess is that Bramalage may in fact be the name of a farming community. There is a book at LDS that helps me figure this out. If I remember, I'll look yours up. Also, in my experience, almost all of my relatives from that are had two or three names. They were"known" by the last one in the list -- so your relative was known by "Elizabeth" which is consistent. I'm sure the others are all the same person.
Others on this site know much more than I do and can help you further.

Brockdorf is a Bauerschaft or farming community which is part of the
parish of St. Gertrud in Lohne. It was upgraded to a Kapellengemeinde
in 1955. In other words it got its own chapel.
Große Bramlage was a large farm in Brockdorf. It had 124 Hectar land
and was the 13th largest in the Amt Vechta. I do not know the
specifics of your families but I would suspect that they were
Heuerleute on these farms without land of their own.

St Gertrud in Lohne would be the marrying parish.

That's quite typical as people went by different names. Do you have
her baptism record? Does she have three names there? The pastor may
have used different names. It may have been different pastors or it
may have been different women. Requires research.

Search for the baptismal record.

Fred -- Many thanks for all the suggestions. It does seem a little more research is req'd. to get the women's name thing narrowed down.
You are the only one who has offered info about the localities, and for that I am grateful. It helps explain some things.

Since you thanked me so nicely, I did a little more research for you.
(that meant someone else will have to wait)
The heimatbund für das Oldenburger Münsterland publishes a series of
scholarly journals one of which is part of the Rote Reihe.

In any case this volume 11 is a compendium of the residents of the
Parish of Lohne as of 1848. It lists the owners of property and those
who lived on those properties.
For the Bauerschaft Brockdorf we find two Zeller (farmer/owner) named
Willenborg. One is Johann and he has a Heuermann named Johann Herm
Arlinghaus living there. There are 7 others to say something of the
size of the place. Arlinghus has 6 people in his own family and farms
1 Malt. & 8 Scheffel land. He pays the landlord 33 Reichsthaler and 36
Groschen rent. His main occupation is carpenter and wagonmaker
(Stellmacher). The description as to his lifestyle is that he is
making out, ie not in debt. Joh. H. Bramlage is also a Heuermann there
but the main farm is occupied by other relatives.
The other Willenborg, Hugo has another Willenborg, Diekmann, Tienkamp,
Trenkamp and our man Uchtmann living there as a tenant. So the two
Willenborg farms provide our ancestry or better yours.
But then you said the girl was born on the Bramlage place. OK, Zeller
große Barlage also has an Arlinghus Heuermann on his place. Hes was
Johann H. Arlinghaus, just like the other above but probably Heinrich
or Hinrich. He had 5 people in his family, had 1 malt and 10 Scheffel
with 1 1/2 Scheffel meadow. He was a Zimmermann which is also
carpenter. The other guy was a Tischler which is more like a cabinet
maker. He is making out Ok too and also has some capital or assets.
There are 11 farms in Brockdorf with about 55 Heuerfamilies working
them besides the farmers themselves. You can see that things were
tight. Surely many of these people lived in stables and bakehouses as
not enough Heuerhouses would be available for an ever growing
population. Therefore emigration.
Fred -- Well -- aren't you just a WEALTH of information!! It's gratifying and reassuring to know there are people out there who are real experts in this genealogy stuff who are willing to help those of us just getting started. Thanks so very much -- again!!!
Kathy
Well, I'll tell you something. You were easy as you already had the
farm names and the people who lived there. Those farms are still there
and you can surely get pictures via some of the other folks on this
list who might live in or near Lohne. Just remember that most likely
only the main houses remain. Most of the Heuerhauses were torn down or
so greatly modified that they are really different buildings.
I belong to the Lohne Heimatverein* even though I have no direct
connection there. I just want their annual publication. Also, my
sister-in-law lives there but she is computer and technology deprived,
ie no digital anything.
* as well as Essen, Dinklage, Emsteck and a couple others.
If no one responds on the pictures and you would like them, let me know.
Fred
PS If you are just getting started you should ask lots questions.
Don't be bashful.
That's what this list is for.
