Kamp and Griese in Steinbild, Hannover, Germany

Hello,

I am looking for my Grandfather's family. His father's name was Rudolf Kamp born on 22 Mar 1874 in Steinbild, Hannover, Germany. He died on 6 Apr 1916 in Steinbild.

He married Margarethe Griese born on 18 Mar 1875 in Melstrup, Germany. She died on 2 Aug 1960 in Steinbild.

My grandfather Heinrich Kamp who was born on the 26 Feb 1906 and came to the United States when he was 17 years old in Nov of 1923. His older sister Gesine Kamp came to United States on 1 Jun 1922.

I would love to find the rest of the family. Came anyone tell me were Melstrup is in Germany? Where would I start looking for them? Are there any census for that area?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Diana

I am looking for information on John Bernard ENGELKEN. He was born 5 July
1813, in Melstrup, Lower Saxony, to John Theodor ENGELKEN and Anna WUBLE
GROTE ENGELKEN. They belonged to the Catholic Church. I want to know about
any siblings. I would like to know why he decided to leave his homeland.
Were there political, religious, economical events which effected him? He
emigrated to America in 1848, with his wife, Mary Rosina KUPPER, and 4
children. They settled at St. Louis, Missouri for a year before moving to Jo
Davis county Illinois. He worked for 8 yrs in the lead mines to save enough
to buy a farm. In 1857, he moved his family to Allamakee county Iowa, where
they raised 5 children. In 1881, the children gone from home, they moved to
Nemaha county Kansas, where they lived out their days with their eldest son.

Hello Diana,

I have ancestors from Steinbild and in nearby towns. In fact, I have
the Kamp name in my family, but they are much earlier. The first birth I
have recorded is in 1667 and the last was born in 1736. Probably it would
tie into your Kamps of a much later era.

Melstrup is very near Steinbild, near Road 70 (to the south). You might
find it on mapquest.com--or I could also scan a picture from my German
Autoatlas. (There it is Mehlstrup on the map, but Melstrup in the index).
I would guess that people from Melstrup went to church in Lathen. However,
there are other possible towns with a church nearby (even Steinbild itself).
I'll try to verify that from some website that I can't remember now.

Obtaining the data from this area is difficult because the Catholic
church has not allowed the LDS (Mormons) to develop film for that area. I
myself visited Osnabrück to do genealogical research. I know you can have
the diocesan office in Meppen do research for you for about $19 an hour.
That could get pricey! This is the website:
http://www.kgverband-meppen.de/familienforschung.html
Your ancestors there were Catholic, right?

There is a German website which has an index of various names:
http://meta.genealogy.net/index.jsp On that page put in the surname and if
you want to fill in the town (ort) you can. There are a number of Kamps
there, but the names and years may not match what you are looking for.

Good luck!

Diana,

Here is a website showing that Melstrup was a part of the parish of
Lathen:
    http://www.emslanders.com/map_ksp_lathen.htm

By the way, that website is all about the immigrants to the USA from that
area in Germany (near the Ems river). It is very interesting:

There are civil registers since 1875 for everybody. So you might ask them also
beside the churches to send you over documents of birth, death or marriage. Each
documents will be about 8,- or 9,- Euro - don't know exactly - but there is no
additional research fee giving the exact dates, which you own, perhaps some fee
for stamps on the letter. Here the adresses for Steinbild:

          Catholic Church: Pfarramt St.Georg,26892 Kluse, 04963 585

          Civil Administration: Gemeindeverwaltungen, 26892 Kluse

He married Margarethe Griese born on 18 Mar 1875 in Melstrup, Germany. She

The same for Melstrup:

          Catholic Church: (probably)Katholisches Pfarramt, Kirchstr.10, 49762
                          Lathen

          Civil Administration: Gemeindeverwaltungen, Schulstr.6,49762

Both places are situated nearby the small river Ems, a bit north of Lathen. Today
there is a special railway centre for the magnetic train, which has nor wheels
but is suspended by magnetic power.

There are peole named GRIESEN in:

Lathen:
- Griesen, Helena, Bahnhofstr.15,49762 Lathen, Tel. 05933 4751
- Griesen, Wilhelm, Hans-Hoppe-Str.9, 49762 Lathen, Tel. 05933 4023
Fresenburg:
- Griesen, Heinz-Hermann, Landwirt (profession), Strhn 73,49762 Fresenburg,
                          Tel.05933 594
Steinbild: no GRIESEN, but nine KAMP entries in 1995 (same year for the other)

Greetings and best wishes Hans Peter Albers
