Jahnke, Danzig area

Dear family researchers,

I'm Cynthia Christ and I live in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. I'm new to
this group. My German is not so good, so I'm writing in English. I want to
say Hi and introduce myself. I've been researching my family history for
more than 10 years. The surnames are Christ, Jahnke, Boettcher, Vesper and
Mislin.

I have been searching for years for my Jahnke family. I've been told that
they lived in the Danzig area of West Prussia. I've been able to trace my
Jahnke family back to 1872, when they immigrated to the USA. But I had
very little information on them until now.

I learned that my ancestor was a captain in the Calvary and was killed in
the Franco-Prussian War. I've been reading the Franco-Prussian War
Casualty lists. I'm looking for help and advice.

What would my ancestor's militarily title be? Many of the titles are
abbreviated.

What type of unit would I look for? Would members of a calvary be part of
an infantry unit?

The casualty lists names the town the men are from. Is there a database
where I can learn the Polish name of the German City that is listed?

Here's what I know about my Jahnke Family:

My great grandfather is

Paul Theodore Jahnke,

Born -- 14 March 1858, Danzig, West Prussia

Immigrated to USA in 1872

Died -- 28 September 1930, Buffalo, New York

His Father:

Jahnke, captain in the Calvary, died in the Frano-Prussian War, between
1870-1871

His first name may be Johann

His Mother:

Lena Jans

Born -- about 1827

She appeared to re-marry and was called Lena Fohl

Died - between 1910-1920 in Buffalo, NY

Thanks for your help.

Cynthia

Cynthia,

for the time period mentioned you would not need to know any Polish place names (provided you do not have to refer to past 1920 documents) since Danzig-Westpreussen belonged to the German Kingdom of Prussia. Until 1866 however, the eastern provinces of Prussia ( East and West Prussia with Danzig as well as Posen) were not part of 'Deutscher Bund' (German Federation).

As in the US Army, the Prussian cavalry was not part of the infantry, cavalry soldiers were mounted troops, the infantry was not. The general translation of the rank of army captain would be 'Hauptmann', in the cavalry though, the rank was called 'Rittmeister'.

You will find some 20-30 GB of materials largely related to your search area in West Prussia... I research there and am bit of a information & data hoarder. Here are some kinks (by the way almost everything is free).
