Would any one on the list know if there is an E-mail list for Hessen?
Also would like to hear from any Marhenke's in German or English-----Bob
Marhenke
Yes there is. Go to the Rootsweb mail list pages and you can sign up
from there.

Hi Bob,
This is a place to look up some email addresses in Germany. Are you
looking for a person in Hessen or what?
Check this: http://www.email-verzeichnis.de/indexGB.html
Go to:
http://list.genealogy.net/mailman/listinfo-e
For a list of all mailing lists on this server.
You'll see Hessen-L there.

Why aren't there more mailing lists that are bilingual? I would love to see
one in Bavaria and Westfalen, etc. etc. I can struggle through German here
and there, but not all the time!

I started the first 10 or so lists and since then others have started
new ones which are run by Germans many of whom don't speak our
language. So they prefer that the lists are held in German. I
disagree with this philosophy but what can one do?
It's like having your own little group without having to worry about
outsiders peeking in and taking advantage of your knowledge.
There are other lists on rootsweb which are mostly multi-lingual. The
Westfalen list was started as bi-lingual but I gave it up right away
to Arthur Teschler and he or the present owner must have changed the
scheme. Last I heard it was bi-lingual. I've not noticed any problems
there with English messages.

but there are some.
however, when a lists is a German only list, it is just that, a german only
list.
as with most things, folks want to open mail for those things that appeal to
them in their own language.
you can subscribe to these german only lists, but best to follow their rules
and post only in german
you can go here
http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html
and click on germany and find other lists...
and while you are at this site, check our the surname lists that exist..

The Eifel list is 40% English-speaking and very bi-lingual!

there is a wonderful Hessen mailing list run by Don Watson. Try
www.gohessen.com
I hope that works. I know he moved it and I have not been a member for
several years, but his web page should give you directions to subscribe to
the list.
