Immigration to Australia & New Zealand

I am descended from German people who emigrated at different times, from
various places in the old Germany, to Australia. While I acknowledge that
from an estimated 6 million German peoples who emigrated from the German
fatherland over a period spanning the middle to late 19th Century, only a
very small fraction of these people (some 200,000 odd) emigrated to
Australia or New Zealand. Most of the 6 Million people ended up in the
United States or Canada and others ended up in various parts of South
America.

In my case I have German ancestors from Mecklenburg, West Prussia,
Pommern, Brandenburg and also from near Bremen in Hanover. My German
ancestors immigrated here to Queensland Australia over a range of years
from 1862 to 1888. In all cases, the reasons for my different families
immigrating to Australia were for economic reasons not religious.

I have been involved in researching my German ancestry for around 8 years
now and the biggest single obstacle to someone researching German
ancestry from Australia is the sheer distance that this country is from
Europe.

As a matter of interest does anyone in Germany know of any of his or her
Research families who immigrated to Australia in the 19th Century.

Hello Noel
One of my families (JASPER married to a SIEMSS) came from
Mecklenburg-Schwerin, arriving in Victoria in January 1858.
Because I had the name of a village from a birth certificate in Victoria
(and I mean village-there are only about 10 houses there) I was able to
find the parish, thence the parish and census records. I have now got one
of the lines back to the beginning of parish records in 1671. If any of
your families came from Mecklenburg-Schwerin, you are in luck, because the
records there are wonderful!
If you don't have the name of a parish, but you know the name of the ship
they arrived on, (and it left from Hamburg), you can access the shipping
record via the LDS library. This is the record of the ship when it LEFT
Hamburg, not it's arrival in Australia. The name of the last place in
Mecklenburg that the person was living is listed on this record.
This is a great start.
There is also the 1819 census index, which lists surnames of people in each
town etc. It is indexed both by surname and by town. If you have a fairly
uncommon name, the families are easy to find (normally).
There are also a couple of wonderful Mecklenburg websites.
Also, the people on this list are the most helpful of any I have been on.
Ask your question, and see what happens!
Regards
Leonie

I don't know about ancestors who emigrated yet.
You can find out more about emigrants from Mecklenburg in the State Archive
of Schwerin, Mecklenburg.
They have the emigration lists from nearly anyone of mecklenburg who
emigrated. I think some lists were destroyed in a fire. Probably they have
been filmed by the mormones??

Hi Noel,

sorry, I had a closer look at the page. They only have a poor summary. If
you have questions about the page, feel free to ask. I'll try to translate.

Good luck again
