Hello listers,
Some of you have tried to help me before and I thank you for you suggestions and information. I got the film of the 1819 census for Kambs Mecklenburg but was unable to read only a very small part of it.
I wonder if anyone has access to that and could tell me if Catherine Dorothea Holtz / Holst / Holz is recorded there?
All I know about her is that she had a son, Heinrich Ludwig Holz in 1814 in Sembzin, Mecklenburg.
Can anyone help? Should I try the film again, hoping to get a clearer one? I have been up against this „brick wall“ for a long time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Phyllis
Hello Phyllis,
I looked up my 1819 index for Kambs: there´s no Holtz or similar in that parish. Unfortunatly I´ve got only the part where I can look up the family-names in the towns- no alphabetical index and too much work to look up every town for your name...
My suggestion:
a. take the 1819 alphabetical index (northern Mecklenburg-Schwerin)
b. notice every Holst
c. take first the nearest town around Kambs where you find Holst.
Do you know how the name is written in old german language? If not: try this homepage:
http://www.peter-doerling.de/Englisch/Sutterlin.htm
-write down your name Holtz and similar in Sutterlin- so you´ll know where you have to look for
-if you find your name in the film and can´t read it: copy it and send it to me or to the list
- there´s the possibility too, to ask the Landesarchiv in Schwerin to look up the name in special towns (after you look up the index) against a fee. They would send you copies and you wouldn´t need to look up all those films.
Hope this helps a little bit,
Heike

Hi,
your strategy is good, but unfortunately, in the 'nothern part' of
the index of 1819 census if Mecklenburg-Schwerin contains
about 20 entries each for Holst, Holtz or Holz. :-((
(and at a first glance, no one pretty close to Kambs).
Sincerely,
