Hannover-L Nachrichtensammlung, Band 56, Eintrag 8

Hello,
I just found, that a Mr. Ireland already entered datas about Cordt
Henry Teaves at www.rootsweb.com

He gave as profession of Cordt "sugarbaker" (sugar-refiner).
He gave as date of death December 1873 in St. Georges in the East,
London.
St. Georg was also a german lutheran church in London, perhaps, they
have an archive.
The adress of Cordt in the census of 1861 was: 17 Morgan St.

A lot of workers in the UK-sugar industry came from the former kingdom
of Hannover.
A very good website about the history of the sugar-industry is :
http://www.mawer.clara.net/intro.html

It contains also a database with serveral hundred names of sugarbakers.

It tried to identify Cordt, but without luck.
I looked for the names Tews, Tewes, Tees, Thies, even Dirs.

Thats all I found.

Have a nice day

Good Morning,

Thank you very much for all the information about the sugar bakers in
England.
I was always wondering why so many people from Hanover emigrated to England.
I know now why. Thanks for the answers.

I am searching for a John Buckhorn from Hanover since a long time. Also a
sugar baker. He lived with his family, his wife was born in England, in East
End of London and his Church was St. George. They probably lived in
Liverpool before. The census tells about it but I have doubt that it is the
same family (The names are the same).

Take a look at http://www.wbuchhorn.de/emigranten/london.html (German)
and Buchhorn from Hannover to London, Great Britain (English)

In the census is a "(BS)" beside John's name. Somebody told me it would mean
"British subject". What is the meaning of it? Does it mean he was
naturalized after his arrival in England or does it mean he was born in
Germany but was never been a German? Maybe his parents were British citizens
and worked in Germany.

Help would be appreciated.

I wish you all a very nice weekend.

Hi Wolfgang,

Don't know what it means for your ancestor, but there is no such thing as a
British citizen :o) (I can already hear the guys in the UK disagree). The
British are all "subjects to the Queen" - Untertanen, since the country is a
kingdom.
If BS refers to a British subject that would basically mean that your
ancestor held a UK passport. As for naturalization, there was a thread on it
in this group just some days ago, albeit in relation to someone who went to
the US, but emigrated from Germany - the thread explains the relation with
the former patria of the emigrant nicely.

Ta,
