I have received a photo which is supposed to be my gr. grandfather. I only know that he was from Westfalen, Prussia, born about 1826 and that he came to the US sometime before 1855, so it would have to be somewhere in that time frame. Of course the photo is black and white, but it looks to be a black (or dark) tunic with white (or gold) buttons. A stand up white collar. On the shoulders are white appelets (Hope that is the correct word and spelling) I can see on the left one is the number "4" (with an open top on the 4) No hat and doesn't go down far enough to see if it has a belt. His hairdo is what I would call mutton chops, Like long sideburns sticking out of the side of his face, almost to his chin. Would any one on the list have a knowledge of this type of uniform? Marilyn, on this, list sent me some url's for uniforms.
I can't read German, but the site below interested me because it the first 2 paragraghs are in the right date range, and I see in 2 places a #4, like posibbly a division. If someone could look at it that reads German and let me know what it says, I would appreciate it. Also if anyone has knowledge of more uniform sites, I could use that.
