Hello all,

still "fishing in the dark" and trying to figure out where
your ancestors might have come from ??

Well, here is a nice little program, which shows you
the distribution of your name in Germany:
http://christoph.stoepel.net/geogen.aspx
just enter your surname into the Box and click on "Kartieren".

On the next screen you will get three different options to see
the distribution of your name in Germany.
Unfortunately, so far it's only in German, but if there is sufficient
demand we could get in touch with the author of the program and might
be able to change it.

Now, let's take it one step further.

I got a map of my "ZSCHEILE" name and that's what it looks like:

What about if you set up a similar page with your name in our
WIKI ? You could enter all different spellings of the name and
much more.

By the way, it's not to late to come to "Nightschool" :

and I could show you how to make up a page for your surname
"step by step"..

Thanks for the search site, but since I don't know where these places are that are colored in, how am I going to find out where my ancestors came from? I guess I don't know enough about the German map. Is there a map the same size that tells what these areas are? Thanks for any help. Lois

thanks for bringing up this topic and , to be honest,
I was born in Germany a looooong time ago and I have problems
with this map myself... :-((

Everything is so tiny and small.. but you know, that's the actual
purpose of our lists, to get down to the basics of things..

Let's talk about them and find a good solution in order that
EVERYONE is able to understand and implement it.

I am trying to get in touch with the webmaster of that site,
and I hope we will get some kind of a solution....
well, and if it doesn't turn out.. you know me by now, I'm
not a "giver upper" and we have to find another ( our own ?? ) way..

get a start with:

http://wiki-de.genealogy.net/wiki/Bundesrepublik_Deutschland#Politische_Einteilung

There is a map with all "Bundesländern". (our 16 "states"). Print it out.

Compare it with the map from Geogen!
Find out which "Bundesländer" are interessting for your ancestors.

Then watch the frame below the map called "Bundesländer der Bundesrepublik Deutschland". There you can choose those, which are interessting for your ancestors!

If you go for the name Zscheile, I think you first choose "Sachsen"

There you also have to go down to "Politische Einteilung"

Again you have a map with the "Kreise". Maybe its like your "county" in the states. And below the map you have again the frame "Landkreise und kreisfreie Städte im Bundesland Sachsen". Go on there if you need more about the "Kreis".

Try it. And dont be put off cause its the wiki-de. Its all you need are maps. And you just go by the names of the things. So the names are the same in german and english.
