Dolly , Are we to assume you have written to New York state vital statistics, and they have not found the marriage and birth. and that you are positive they took place in New York. ? Have you considered the above could have happened in states around New York and anywhere on the way to Iowa. I wouldn't be concerned at this point trying to find him in Westphalia until I pinned him down in the US. Often when a person more or less disappears it is possible they came over to work/checked things out and returned back to their home land for a time. He could have returned, married there and had the child there. You have only a small obit, there may be a larger one written up in any of the German newspapers published in the area at that time, or even a larger one in a different edition of the newspaper the small obit came from. The death record may be of more value. As often there is a question, if the person was not born in the the US, how many years in country?(at least in Wisconsin). Probate ,tax records and voter registration should be an assist.

Hi Jane;
I have written twice to New York and got the same answer both times for all three items, birth of his wife, their marriage, birth of their first daughter. They tell me they have no records back that far. Hard to believe for a state like NY. I have the marriage information from the divorce papers that I got from Iowa. As far as his death, there was only a small obit in the paper listing no other names , but I also have death records and burial permit, which only give Germany as Nativity. He was buried in a cemetery which was later destroyed , and bodies were moved,and no one knows where his body went. He apparently had no headstone. I have city directories for him. I have obits and other papers for some of his children. I do have him pinned down in the US. Just can't find any papers with names of parents, and proof of when he immigrated. Have him on US census for 1860, 70 and 80. He died in 1882. Of course I keep looking for other obits and I keep putting his name in every search engine that comes along. Maybe could have found more if he had been buried in the cemetery his wife is in ,but because of the divorce, I believe he was pretty much alone at time of death. Thanks for your interest and any advice is greatly appreciated.
