I just did some quick playing around on the computer and think I have been able to solve part of your puzzle.
Pretty sure I have the right FRIES family; they sure traveled aroung alot!! In 1880 August Fries is listed as living in Brooklyn, New York; 1900 he is listed as living in Washington D.C.; 1910 he is listed again as living in Washington, D.C. From what I have checked so far thru my Ancestry.com subscription, August is the fater of John H. Fries born in 1884.
Have found some other info but need to put it into order so it makes sense!! Have also found the New York Passenger List for August. Seems he arrived in New York on 29 May 1874 from Bremen, Germany on the ship Main.
If you send me whatever info you already have on FRIES and DIESEL families, I will be glad to keep playing around in my Ancestry subscription and checking the Newberry Library (genealogy library) here in Chicago.
I don't have a scanner, so if you want to give me your mailing address I will be glad to send you the images I have already obtained and whatever else I can come up with.
