[Genealogy.net-users-en] advise regarding research

Hi all
I have been reading the various e-mails where different people are looking for their ancestors. Please tell me if I have this correct:

If the searcher does not know the date of birth, the town of birth and the ancestor's religion, then the searcher has very little chance of ever finding the ancestor?

1) I don't have the date of birth--just an estimate: 1801 or 1802

2) I don't know the town or region--just a statement on a census record that he came from Baden. However, the Black Forest site states that some Egner's came from there.

3) I do know that he was Catholic--at least his children were baptized in the Catholic church.

Before you ask, I have not been able to find him on the emigration sites and have not found a naturalization record for him. Currently I have been ordering microfilm for that time period from the LDS for villages that contain Egner's. Am I doing the only thing possible otherthan hiring a professional research in Germany?

Thank you
Tonia

Hi Tonia,

well, you see, there are many things in life where you just can't
answer a question with YES or NO.

Many of our members have spent a lot of time and money in
researching their family tree. Sometimes you can be looking
around for many years without getting a clue and then, all of
a sudden... "ZAPPPPP" you are able to add another generation
to your tree.

It always boils down to "Do your homework first " and get any possible
information from your family, your homeplace, county, state, etc.

Once you have exhausted all those resources, only then should you
consider joining our " trip to Germany".

If you are looking for a "Paul Schmidt, born around 1875 in Prussia",
then it's pretty hopeless to find a needle in such a huge "haystack".
However, this is NO reason to give up, sometimes a very small and
minor detail can lead you to another lead...

In the German WIKI:
http://wiki-de.genealogy.net/wiki/Kategorie:Familienname

there are quite a few surnames already listed, but our WIKI

http://wiki-en.genealogy.net/wiki/Category:Surname
doesn't have too many entries yet.

But we could start building this up and including the
names of all the researchers looking for that name, or
of course, you could enter them into our:
http://www.saxonyroots.com/Ancestors_Database/

There are soooo many things we could or should do...
the sky is the limit... just keep trying...

Good night,

Wolf

Hi Wolf
I appreciate your getting back to me. Sometimes it gets a little hopeless & it feels good to get encouragement from someone. (& sometimes in a moment of weakness, I hope I can find the entire tree--but that would take the fun out of the search)

I have been working my way back by going to every county where my great, great grandfather's children lived and collecting all the records at I could at each county courthouse. I do this during the summers so we do not have to worry about the weather. In between I order microfilm from the LDS and search for gggrandpa.

This summer I plan to go to Indiana where he died and to Cinninati, Ohio, which is right across the river from the town in Indiana. Wendelin Egner's widow remarried in Ohio and there are families there with the same last name as Wendelin's son's wife. So there just might be a connection between them. Hopefully I will find records in Ohio for my Wendelin.

At the same time I will continue to review microfilm of churchbooks in Baden in hopes I will find the right Egner.

Thanks again for responding. I am glad you didn't come right out with a yes or no.

Tonia
