[FR] List subscriptions

Dear list members,

The various mailing lists I started back in the mid 90s on genealogy.com/net
will be shut down on September 15th in the current way of working. The list
will be replaced by a category in a forum software named "discourse". The
software is only available in German language.

This change has been announced to all list members in a message in this
message: "Wichtig: Umstellung bei der Mailingliste" by Helga Scabell <
helga@scabell.de> sent on September 7th, at 3 p.m. European summer time.

Now there are two options for each list member:
1) switch to the discourse platform (and subscribe to the category
[Kategorie] of your choice.)
2) do nothing and you'll not receive any emails from this list after
September 15th

All messages can be read on the discourse platform without subscription but
you must be a subscriber to post: <https://discourse.genealogy.net/c/your
list name-l/>

If you'd like to receive separate messages as email, you need to log in
into the platform and adjust some settings in your profile.

In order to send messages to the category, please use this email address
(same as before): <listname-L@genealogy.net> I'm not sure whether your
email address needs to be verified previously. You may just try it out.

I will try to help anyone who wants to be on these original mail lists via
my personal email address: fredrump@gmail.com. In essence you only need to
re-register your current account at genealogy.net using an existing
password. If you can't find it a new one can be sent to you.
https://discourse.genealogy.net/ is the general address to access any and
all lists by choosing the category (list name) you wish to be a part of.
I'm only interested in helping members of Oldenburg-l, Hannover-l,
OW-Preussen-l, Franken-l.

When all this internet genealogy stuff started it was basically in English
and some of us made the attempt to lure German genealogists to the internet
instead of their more private mailbox system. So all my initial email lists
were set up open and bi-lingual. Now the tables have turned and German
genealogy is German genealogy and in German. We have to adjust despite the
fact that almost 1/3 of America is of Germanic background.

So go to

and try to translate but if you can't just type in discourse.genealogy.net
and give your login info. You are then registered and can post and search
any of the list archives from day one.

Hi Fred,
Thanks very much for summarizing the change for everyone.
I do want to check on/confirm one point. I know that the list administration on our lists were always bi-lingual, and now the administration will just be in German, but I believe we're still free to post in whichever language we choose.
I just want to confirm/clarify that so that a lot of the primarily English speakers know that the day to day discussion in the lists won't change. It may just be a little more difficult to set up initially or if they want to make changes. Otherwise, it might discourage people if they think all discussion going forward will only be in German. I'd also comment that some browsers allow for translating whole pages (not perfectly) to help people make the change.
I've copied Oldenburg and Hannover on this e-mail, but not Franken or OW-Preussen because I'm not a member of those, and the question would just get bounced.
Thanks,Don
