Coincidentally, I've got the self same thing with my great grandfather born
about 1854 brought over to England when he was about 10-ish. The English
census records him as 'relative' of the Ehlers family he was living with,
but we're not so sure. You need to find his marriage certificate which will
give his father's name & occupation at least. He will have been taken to the
local German church and they will have recorded something about him and his
sponsors, who I think would have been German also. The church record should
show date of birth and place of origin, marriage/death of his sponsors and
you may find that he may be related by marriage.
