Family Poppenhagen

Hello.... I am researching my husband's family who came from Hamberg Germany
to Australia on a ship called "San Francisco" in 1853. Two brothers travelled together they were Johann Christian Carson Poppenhagen and Frederick Poppenhagen their father was also Frederick Poppenhagen a customs officer and mother Henrietta Helms I have not been able to trace them on the IGI and I hope someone their may be able to help. I would appreciate any info.

Thank you kind regards

Hello Clare

The name "Poppenhagen" is not a common name, even today there are only nine entries in the German phone book, as Klaus has already listed for you. I would recommend that you phone them all, it is much better than writing a letter. Try and arrange for someone who speaks German to assist you on the phone. As you did not indicate where you live in Australia, might I suggest you ask for someone from your nearest Lutheran Church or German Club to assist you on the phone, if you do not have any German friends.

I have the following Poppenhagen immigrants in my Aliens & Naturalizations Indexes, they arrived in Australia as follows:

P. Poppenhagen from Rostock Mecklenburg. Occcupation Kaufmann=
(Merchant/Tradesman/Shopkeeper) arrived on the "Undine" in 1854 from Hamburg to Melbourne and Sydney.

Johann Poggenhagen from Altenhagen Mecklenburg aged 36 yrs. Occupation Schäfer (Shepherd)
Sophia Poggenhagen from Altenhagen Mecklenburg aged 33 yrs. Wife.
Fritz Poppenhagen from Altenhagen Mecklenburg aged 3 months. Son.
This family arrived on the "Electric" from Hamburg in 1856 to Melbourne. Is this Johann related to your ancestors?

There is little point looking for the ancestors of Germans who arrived in Australia on the IGI. Most of the entries extracted for the IGI are for ancestors of Germans who migrated to America.

It is better to do a "place" search on the LDS Family History Library Catalog. Once you can confirm the true place of origin of your family it is easy to check the records yourself. Most of the Poggenhagen families here in Australia seem to have come from Mecklenburg not Niedershasen.

You will find that there are lot's of LDS records already filmed for Rostock, Mecklenburg-Schwerin. For Altenhagen (near Rostock) you could write to the Evangelishe Kirche, 17091 Altenhagen. Dorfstr. 39. Germany .You might ask if they have the records for Altenhagen as they do not appear to have been filmed by the LDS.

Frederick Poppenhagen aged 24 yrs. arrived on the "Sylphide" from Hamburg in 1858 to Melbourne.
Frederick was naturalized 16 September 1861 aged 27yrs. Reg. 3. Memorial No. 3844. NSW State Records, Frederick was living in Singleton, NSW at the time of his naturalization. Is he one of your ancestors? Always keep in mind that many migrants said they came from Hamburg which is true but they were born elsewhere in Germany.

I also have a Frederick Poppenhagen listed in the NSW 1901 Census, living at 54 Susan Street Newtown. There were two females living with him at the time, perhaps his wife and daughter.

Christian Poppenhagen. Naturalized 3 February 1858, Reg.2, p 12. NSW State Records

Stephen Poppenhagen . Naturalized 14 December 1858, Reg.2, p 503.NSW State Records

The LDS have filmed all the "Meldeamt" Police Registration Records for Hamburg. As your ancestors departed from Hamburg, you can check the Meldeamt holdings, as all temporary residents had to register when they arrived from elsewhere or were residents of Hamburg. These registers can be extremely useful as they give date and place of birth etc. and other details. Go to www.familysearch.org click on Family History Library Catalog and using a keyword search <Meldeamt> 34 results will appear on a menu choose which records will suit you best and order the films from your nearest LDS Mormon Library.

I would appreciate the details of your Poppenhagen family arriving on the "San Francisco" as I am unable to locate your ancestors on the passenger list. It is possible all these families are related in some way.

Yvonne has also suggested that you check the births certificates for the children as the parents year and place/country of birth is usually given, this can also be helpful when trying to locate your ancestor's origins.

Hope this will be of some help.

Elizabeth
