Hi Gale.
Thank you for your reply. I think maybe the village of Dortmund I am
looking for may have been taken over and absorbed by the city of Hannover
sometime after 1925. It is not listed in a German atlas. it shows up in a post
mark on an envelope as "Dortmund". Also on a funeral announcement it
shows up as "Dortmund, Hannover". I don't know how to proceed from this point
to learn what is what. The family I am searching for, my mother's people,
came to America in the mid 1850's and their papers clearly shows the
Kingdom of Hanover". Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Bill

Hi Bill:
I am not sure if you know, but Hannover is both a city and state (US
terms), kind of like New York and New York State. In my experiences
when someone referred to Hannover, it was the Kingdom of Hannover
(kinda like a state), not the city of Hannover. However, if an
individual was from the city of Hannover, their reference would
probably been to the city.
There is a city of Dortmund in Germany, but It appears to me that it is
in the area of [1]North Rhine-Westphalia not Hannover. However, in
this genealogy game, one discovers that there are no absolutes , but
you can come close.
