Database log in

Hello All,

I hope you had a good start into the weekend and the temperatures
in your area are getting a bit more bearable.. Even here, in the "deep South"
the nightly temperatures are " bone chilling".. :frowning:

OK.. another topic..

I had a few inquiries about the "log in" into our databases.
http://www.germanyroots.com/Ancestors_Database/

Whenever you want to edit any data or add new data, you have
to re-enter all your personal details again, which could be quite a nuisance..

Of course, as always, there are several solutions to this problem and
I would like your opinion on that..

The easiest way would be, that you allow your computer to accept "cookies".
Then, whenever you enter your email address ( and/ or maybe an additional
code number) your identity is being verified and you get access to the
database..

That is an easy way and I can't see anything wrong with it, however, some
computer users object to that and don't like anyone having access to their
computers (well.. that would be a dream.. as soon as you access the internet
with your computer, a sick "mayhem" may have access to your computer
and enter anything he/she wants..)

The other way would be, that you enter your email address.
The database is then being queried if you are already a member.
If this succeeds, you are presented with another page, where you have to
fill in a special code and on verification you will have access to the database.
But, unfortunately this has to be done again and again when you want
to enter more data..

What are your opinions ?? Any other ideas ??

Have a nice weekend,

Wolf

Hello All,

Hello back Wolf. I can't see where getting a cookie from you would be any
different than the ones we already get from all the other genealogy
sites. Cookies are ok here. They can be dumped when no longer wanted.

My opinion? Having to re-enter all the data is burdensome. Either of your solutions could work. I allow cookies on my computer and occasionally delete them using the "Tools" of Internet Explorer.
The second method you mention where the site recognizes the email address is an ideal way and the "special code" could be the individual's password. The database could be set up to recognize both the email address and the password as identifying a member I should think. MOST sites allow that.

Me too Wolf, I'm OK with cookies.

Wolf,
It has been years since I put a query on here that I hope I am sending it to the correct place----
We had a new surname show up in our German line and can't seem to find a mention of it anywhere. I have searched on several sites and it just doesn't seem to be a name that comes up. So, hopefully someone on this site has ideas
The name is KAIEBE. We had been told by many for years that the woman's surname was Table/Tabel. But, on a 1925 Iowa census her daughter and one of her sons list her maiden name as KAIEBE. I am guessing that in english it may sound close to Table. Anna Marie Kaiebe was born in Germany but, came to the USA as an adult and died near Burlington Iowa and is buried at the Latty Cemetery just outside Burlington Iowa.
Thanks for any help anyone can give.
