I have a messy copy of a "loosungs Schein" issued to my ggf, Teodor Hartman(n) in 1877.
It states that he was awarded an ersatz Komission from the achte bezirk Brigade out of Schlachau
because of a " grosse Narbe zu Fuss,"A large scar on his foot- probably unable to march with infantry? Married to Matilda Tessmer, he emigrated to Connecticut in March of 1893 with several children, the oldest of which was my gf, John Paul, who was the father of my father, John William. Just to be consistent, my oldest is John Thomas.
Some years ago when I visited Pila(Schneidemuhl) and Chojnice(Konitz) I found that another town on the lower end of the Muskendorfer See, no longer existed- and Schlochau was now
Czluchow.
On my mothers side, I have a Geburts Urkunde for Anna Markowski, i880, daughter of Peter and Emilie xxxxxx. She married August Miller. They came to CT in1907 with 2 1/2 children..August (their son) arrived 3 months after the ship docked.
