I am searching for my great great grandfather. Conrad Henry Hogrefe was born October 4, 1840 in Hanover. On October 1, 1870 he married Mary S Kuhlman. Mary S Kuhlman was born February 15, 1843 in Hanover. They had one son, Henry Detrick Fredrick born November 26, 1871. They immigated to America in August of 1872. They were Lutheran.
Please let me know if anyone has information on this family.
I only speak English but I will have any information translated that comes to me in German.

You should try a google.com search for "conrad hogrefe" (using the
quotes to narrow the search). Thre seems to be a place in Eickeloh which
is a former farm either belonging to or operated by Conrad Hogrefe. There
are other interesting results you may find interesting. Eickeloh is south
of Walsrode on the Aller river. There is also an indication of Hogrefes
from the town of Bosse which is up the river northeast (but I can't remember
where I saw that!)
Also, both the names of Hogrefe and Kuhlman appear in the census records
of Achim, Hoya, and Martfeld. All of these places are southeast of Bremen
and in the same general area as the towns listed above.
Please understand that there are probably many other areas where Hogrefe
are found! These is simply some things that I found. Good luck on your
search.

Thank you so much. I have looked for Conrad and Mary for a long time. I
have googled him many times before but I did not google again before I
posted the query. I "gave up" looking for him for the past several months
and decided when I found this website the other day that I would try and add
a query.
His naturalization papers only said Hanover. And the manifest for the ship
he came to the U.S on only said Germany. I had no idea how to start
narrowing it down.
I also appreciate the website you gave me for the 1852 census. I will see
where this information leads me.

Dear Readers,
Just a short additional remark about the census discussion and the
Hogrefe lookup.
The name index of the yet published census data can be helpful for
families from the Achim, Martfeld and Hoya area and for very
seldom names. But if you have a name and a place of orgin, it is the
much better and much more promising approach to check the
census of the relevant area itself at the archive (until the census
data of this area is not published) or - even better - to check the
relevant parish registers and trace the family further back this way.
The family name Hogrefe is very usual in the area ariund Walsrode
and Fallingbostel indeed. Unfortunately the census data of the
relevant Ämter (Ahlden, Fallingbostel and Rethem) were not yet
found and might be partly or completely lost.
