Hello list,
I would like to confirm some assumptions I have made based on computer
translations of German information I have found about my relatives.
Catherina Maria Elisabeth WINNER married Johann Bernard Joseph STICKFORT on
Feb 05 1793.
Many of the records I have found list him as Stickfort (gnt. Winner) Johann
Bernard/Winner. From what I can gather this means that Catherina owned the
Winner farm and that Stickfort took the family name for that reason.
At the Niedersächsisches Landesarchiv archives I find two references to a
Johann Stickfort from the same time period in Oldenburg. The first is from
Münsterisches Amt Vechta mit Burgmannenkollegium archives under the section
Angelegenheiten einzelner Adelsfamilien bzw. Adelsgüter (Häuser). The case
is described as: Nachricht wegen des Kanons aus dem an den
Artilleriestückmeister Johann Stickfort überlassenen und jetzt im Besitz
des von Elmendorff auf Gut Füchtel befindlichen Grund, für den der von
Elmendorff den Kanon zahlt. Enthält: auch Angaben zu einem zwischen Gut
Füchtel und Gut Welpe gelegenen Damm.
The horrible translation of the legal information, as best I can make it
out, says that Johann Stickfort owned an artillery piece (so I also assume
he was in the Dragoons) that was being given to the Canon of Elmendorff.
Therefore Stickfort was prominent enough to be a member of the military,
and in charge of artillery in some fashion. Catherina however was the
daughter of a land-owner and inherited the farm when her father (Johann
Henrich Winner) died. That means she was the oldest surviving child, which
matches my records because her two older sisters died months apart the year
before she was born.
Do I have that all correct? I would like to include it in the narrative
version of the family history and want to make sure I have it as accurate
as I can for something that happened in the late 1700s

Paul, the above relevant information seems to be referring to an
archival file on the case. The word 'Nachricht' is a report of sorts.
In any case, Johann was an artillery officer of some kind and the
canon was left in his care but it is now in possession of von
Elmendorff (who was a member of the lower nobility, probably a
Freiherr or Baron). Von Elmendorff stored this canon on the grounds of
the Füchtel estate. The last few words are not clear to me either. I
don't know whether it refers to the property or the canon but
Elmendorff is paying for something. 
I would inquire about receiving the entire contents of the archival
package to get more detail as to what is going on here.

I think there is a misunderstanding of the German wording. Kanon is this case means the anual levies, taxes imposed on properties (or pieces of land). In this case the information (Nachricht) refers to a piece of land which was initially left to Johann Stickfort and was then (at the time the record was drawn up) in the possession of von Elmendorff living on the F�chtel Estate (Gut F�chtel), for which von Elmendorff pays annual taxes ("Kanon").

Hmmm, one learns a little more every day. I never heard of 'kanon'
being a tax. It's just funny that he was an Artilleriestückmeister and
it fits Kanone so well.
