hi all
I'm posting because i would like to know where my ancestors records are because i am planning to visit Poland next April 2011 the only information i have are my grandma was born in Willims Ostpreuben which is now Wilimy, Poland this only a small village so have no idea where they would be buried or marry or get christened. Or was all these type of records moved to Germany.
Hi yourself,
Willims was a small place (1933: 440 inhabitants, 1939: 364 inhabitants) in the East Prussian county of Roessel (today, Polish 'Reszel'). Catholic church records for the place were kept in Gross Boessau, Protestant church records in Bischofsburg; the civil registry was in Bischofsburg, too. If church and civil records have survived, they may be found in the Polish State Archives in Olsztyn, formerly Allenstein. Copies may be in Germany.
Darrel, do not expect to find the graves or even the cemeteries from
the people who used to live there. If the cemeteries exist they would
have been taken over by the new residents of the area with only their
own graves showing up. Also, don't expect to find the churches. Most
old protestant churches are either gone or have been taken over by new
Polish RC parishes. You'll need to head for the regional archives to
find the records but they're proabably also available at your local
LDC family history center.
The RC records that had been stored in Germany have all been given
back to the respective RC dioceses in present Poland.

Hallo Westpreussenforscher,
nach meiner Information befinden sich die Personenstandregister
(Taufen) Riesenburg Jahrgang 1907 im Staatsarchiv Elbing bzw.
Marienburg. Nun gibt es aber ja auch die Mglichkeit ein
Auskunftsersuchen an das Standesamt 1 in Berlin zu richten. Wie sollte
man vorgehen, bzw. was geht schneller und ist evtl. gnstiger?
