Bishop of Hildesheim

I believe that I read that Hildesheim vor 1621 was evangelisch. I have a baptismal record from about 1700 that refers to someone being a soldier for the Bishop of Hildesheim. Would this have been an evangelisch bishop? Can anyone tell me about the church having soldiers? Thanks. Carol

Carol,
If you do a search for Hildesheim on the LDS family search website, you
will find several church records (both Evangelical Lutheran and Catholic).
In addition there are several military records.
Sorry I wish I knew more history to answer your question!

Dear Carol,

A bishopric was a territory that had to be defended just as other
principalties, so they needed soldiers.
There was no evangelic or lutheran bishop in Hildesheim.
1688-1702 there was Jobst Edmund von Brabeck as a bishop. Then it took them
12 years to get a new one:
1714-1723 Joseph Clemens Herzog (duke) von Baiern.

Carol,

Hildesheim is since 815 a diocesan town. And if referred to as a bishop of
Hildesheim it would always be a catholic ("katholischer") bishop. According
to Hildesheim – Wikipedia (GERMAN!!) in the
16./17. century the city council was shepherding the Lutherans as
"evangelischer" bishop, but there was no such person.

If referred to as "bishop of Hildesheim" in any historic source my first
guess would be the catholic bishop.
To the best of my knowledge, the only church with an army, has been the
catholic one. Even in the religious wars 1618-1648 the "Lutheran armies"
have always been armies of a sovereign fighting in favour for the Lutherans
or - as some might say - against the old (catholic dominated) order for
their own interests, where the Lutheran religion came in handy.
