Baum & Schwartz

Hello
I am researching my father's family and provide the following in the hope that you may be able to assist me.

(1) BAUM: His grandfather is Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Baum, born 21 August 1840 in Ransen?, Preussen, Germany. He emigrated to South Australia in 1858
with his parents Johann Gottlob Baum and Anna Rosina (Hannah) ??, siblings Johann Carl Ernst, Johann Friedrich Herrmann and Christiane Luise. They left Hamburg in 1858, and sailed to South Australia. I have obtained this
information from the Koppitke shipping list.

(2) SCHWARTZ: His grandfather is Johann Gottlieb Schwartz, born 18 September 1829 in Siefersdorf, Silesia, Preussen. He immigrated to South Australia in
1839 (aged 10) with his parents, Johann Friedrich Schwartz (born 1797 in Siefersdorf) and Eva Rosina Liebig. Their children are (I believe) Johanna Dorothea born 1828, Johann Gottlieb born 1829, Johanne Christiane born 1833, and Johanne Dorothea Elisabeth born 1834 - all born in Siefersdorf.

I would greatly appreciate any information you may be able to give me on either the Baum or Schwartz families.
Sincerely
Judith Schwartz

Hello Judith Schwartz:

I am researching my father's family and provide the following in the hope that you may be able to assist me.

(2) SCHWARTZ: His grandfather is Johann Gottlieb Schwartz, born 18 September 1829 in Siefersdorf, Silesia, Preussen.

In Silesia are many villages with the name Siefersdorf!
This is the problem one.

Therefor you must tell first the religion of your grandfather, because the northern part of Silesia (Lower Silesia) was often evangelical, the southern part (Upper Silesia) most catholic.

The name SCHWARTZ is a particularly common name in Silesia, which is the second problem. But I hope, we can help you.

Sincerely
Claus Christoph

Good Morning Judith,
My mother-in-law is a Swartzer (it may be Swartz), and I have little information except that they are from Silisea. Her grandmother is Erna Swartzer, and I have some information on her family tree, although I have not had much success searching. I am happy to send you what I have, or you may view my tree on Ancestry.com. Please let me know if this might help.
Thank you,
Gwen Graham

Hello Judith,
do you know the book "Nineteenth-Century Emigration of Old Lutherans from Eastern Germany (Mainly Pomerania and Lower Silesia) to Australia, Canada, and the United States" by Clifford Neal SMITH? It lists several SCHWARZ from Seiffersdorf, Kreis Freystadt including a tailor Johann Friedrich aged 41 in 1838 and a child Johann Gottlieb aged 7 in 1838. They seem to be two of the ancestors you are looking for. The Lutheran parish (I don't know if the *Old* Lutheran too) for Seiffersdorf was Freystadt. But you should give it a try:

Hello again Judith,
Ransen [Ręszów] was a village in the Steinau district of Lower Silesia. Here is what I found connected to Australia:

"The barque Sophie was a Godeffroy vessel which arrived on 21 Oct 1858 at Adelaide under Capt A. Decker.
This was the 4th of 10 trips to Australia and amongst its 97 mainly Prussian passengers from Bomst, Friedrichshuld,
Rackwitz, *Ransen* and elsewhere were the Bartels, *Baum*, Baumgarten, Fock, Grosser, Hennig, Kalms, *Liebich*,
Mueller, Mundt, Neldner, Sauer, Schmelzkopf, Schultz, Stieler, Weckert and Wischer families."

The LDS have just the Ransen Lutheran baptismal registers from 1802 to 1823 (the CRO registers from 1874 to 1885 are not of interest for you),

FHL INTL Film 1618432 Item 3.

Funnily enough, the original Lutheran registers are stored in the catholic archidiocesan archive in Wrocław (by the way, don't await more than from the LDS microfilms):
