Back to work

Hello All,

I hope you all had a good 'summer' and 'vacation' time and survived
the excessive 'heatspells'..

Naturally, some of our lists have been kind of slow since almost everyone enjoyed the 'outdoors'..
Now we are back to 'normal' temperatures and I think it would be a good time to come back to work..

It was no 'idle time' for me and I worked pretty well '24-7' to combine all of our databases into a kind
of 'Super Database', since to me, it doesn't make much sense to have the same person appear
in several separate databases.. but unfortunately,.. I'm only about half way through..

There are still some outstanding passengerlists from our transcribers and it would be nice if they
could be finished whenever possible..

And there are more passengerlists available for transcription and if anyone has some sparetime to
transcribe them, that would be very much appreciated..

It also would be nice if anyone has access to more lists for transcription, since we are running
'kind of low'..

As you all know, in most cases the passengerlists don't have much detailed information
about the background of the emigrants, but I'm constantly on the look-out for more..

Just today, I found 'thousands' more emigrants from Westphalia to the USA with a lot
of detailed info where they came from, their families, occupations etc..

This all is in printed form, but has to be transcribed painfully..

Anyone willing to HELP ??

Anyone willing to HELP ME get this organized, since I'm completely 'OVERLOADED'..

Thanks for listening to me and have a nice weekend,

Wolf

Hello Wolf,
please let me know more about "printed form" and send a ``part`` of the
list to me. I'll try and then report what I can do.

For Engelbert Wewer I have also a copy of Petition for Naturalization,
Year 1864, New York County, but I can not find him in a Census.
Are not all Census list online or what is the reason?

Greetings from Germany
Helmut

What was his full name and age or year and place of birth?

The surname could have been read and transcribed as Wemer or Werner

Johannes Engelbert Wewer, born 27 Aug 1827 in Lwen, Prussia, Germany,
moved ~1850 to USA, Naturalization Year 1864, Court: Superior Court,
New York County, Occupation: Tailor.
Our family-chronicle tells he was a cloth merchant, was married and has a
son.

This is a bit more information but not enough to sort out all the
possible people in the 1880 Census. What was the wife's given name,
birth year, son's name and year.

The Census enumerator wrote down what he heard and most likely was not a
German speaker

Search in the Census for John Wewer, Werner, Wemer, Warner, Weiner,
Weiwer, Wiener , Wiewer etc, born in Germany in 1817 2 years and look
for any that match occupation, wife child etc. and you will probably
find him. At home I have only access to the 1880 Census on familysearch.

That is the point and my problem. I do not know wife's or son's name.
He was called Engelbert. This given name is also written in the Petition
for Naturalization and not Johannes or John etc.
Until now I have not found the harbor in US nor the ship he used.

I checked 1860 and 1880 Census in a lot of variations for family
and given name, no result.
Thank you for dicussing this matter with me.

I have access to all US censuses through Ancestry.com and checked
out the 1860 and 1870 ones for Engelbert Wewer. I could not find
anything. However, I noticed that a Henry Kruger was his witness
or sponsor for his naturalization. So I looked for Henry and
found several, but only one tailor.
1870 United States Federal Census > New York > New York > New York
Ward 14 District 14 (2nd Enum)
Henry Kruger, Tailor, Page 13, line 22 with wife Alice, both born
in NY, and 3 children born in NY, ages 16 to 8
I looked at the other 38 pages of that census district and did not
find anything close to Engelbert Wewer. I also looked closer at
any entry with the occupation of Tailor. Page 15 had quite a few
tailors, but no Wewer

If you have more information on his wife or children, I could do
the searches for them or a combination.

Regards,
Karen

There are 7 Eng*t W*r who entered through the Port of New York 1850 -
1864 per the CastleGarden.org web site.

Try that search and extend the years earlier and see if any of them
might be your man. He also could have entered through Boston,
Philadelphia or even Baltimore.

When is the last time he was known to be in Germany?

Transcribe and post the Petition for Naturalization. I am not sure what
information was on one from 1866 but ones I have sen from that time had
the name of a sponsor. Have you looked to find out if he was actually
naturalized?

I would ask on the rootsweb.com New York County Message Board or List
or the
CASTLE-GARDEN MB or list. This list is mainly for English speaking people
searching for information in Germany.

There is also a USA-Naturalization list on rootsweb.

Until now I have not found the harbor in US nor the ship he used.

If you have access to Ancestry.com you should be able to search for
Engelbert W* in NY age 33 in 1860, etc..
