I have been told by a researcher that has been a huge help to me that land until sometime in the 1800's was not owned by individuals. It was instead owned by the church, state or the royals. But, the people living on the land had a right to pass it down to their child. My husbands lines seem to all have been farm workers or "owners" of land. It appears that the lands, there are several, are still in the family's hands. Can someone explain in greater detail just how this all worked. And who decided that the land could finally be purchased by the workers living on it. How can you tell from records ( and which record) if your family was entitled to buy the land or could only continue on as a worker? Thank you,
