Ziska - Schleswig (or Scleswig), Germany, on the line of Bohemia

Hello!
I'm looking for information on Julius Ziska, born December 06, 1826 in
Schleswig (or Scleswig), Germany. I am particularly interested in locating
his birth records or information on his family/parents.

I am a descendant of Julius Ziska. The only information I have on him was
retrieved from a book named "Album of Genealogy and Biography - Cook County,
Illinois 1899". In it was a statement providing the only clues as to the
location in Schleswig:

"Julius Ziska was born in Scleswig, Germany, on the line of Bohemia,
December 6, 1826, and died at his home in Chicago February 15, 1899. He
learned the butcher's trade and served in the standing army five years,
having volunteered his services. In 1844 he emigrated to the United
States and located in Chicago". I also know that Julius was a consistent and
influential member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church when in the
United States (according to the book).

I am having particular difficulty in locating possible towns that Julius
would have been born in. In the Album of Genealogy and Biography I found, it
actually spelled the place of birth as "SCLESWIG" Germany, on the line of
Bohemia. When I use that spelling, I receive many inquiries as to where I
saw it or read it. Scleswig or Schleswig were not close to Bohemia, so I am
also puzzled by the reference "on the line of Bohemia". However, I have
confirmed through multiple searches of the internet that Scleswig is
sometimes used as an alternate spelling of Schleswig.

Any assistance or recommendations are very much appreciated. This is a
project I've started for my father, who knows nothing about his ancestors,
and my daughter who was born with a heart defect and helps me with the
research as hobby. I am in San Diego California and would be happy to do
research in this area in return.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this email. Any help is
GREATLY appreciated.

Hello Jim,

Hi Jim,
here are a few thoughts:
The German telephone directory has 145 Ziskas and 337 Zischkas.
The DUDEN FAMILIENNAMEN (a dictionary of German surnames) lists ZISCHKA as a
Sorb/Wendish - the Sorbs are a Slavic ethnic minority in Germany -surname,
meaning ZEISIG in German. The name very likely also exists in Czech - since
there might be a Bohemian connection.

Hello again, Jim.

this is a very keen guess: "born in Scleswig, on the line of Bohemia". Might
that mean "born in Schlesien(Silesia), near the Bohemian border"?. This
would make more sense, but again, Silesians were mostly Catholics, not
Evangelical Lutherans.
You may want to pose your problem in the Schlesien-Liste whose address Eva
gives below.

Ziska sounds like a Czech (Bohemian) name.
