I came the group list some time ago and am hoping one of you can help with my research.
I am researching my great great grandfather: Julius ZISKA (aka CISKO, SISKO), was born on or about December 06, 1828 in Hanover Germany. There are clues that may indicate otherwise. In a biography published in Chicago, his family stated that he was born in Scleswig, Germany, on the line of Bohemia. Julius later emigrated to the US (Cook County, Chicago) in 1844, the same year as his wife, Fredericka? ROSENBAUM (birthplace Prussia). It is not clear if they traveled together. He was known as a consistent and influential member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chicago. I have recently located the 1860 census which shows his birthplace is Hanover and his last name is spelled CISKO. In 1880, the census shows his last name as SISKO. All future references by family show his name spelled ZISKA and birthplace Germany.
The contradictions in spelling and birthplace are frustrating and have slowed my research. I am looking for help in confirming the spelling of the last name, and determining the exact location he was from to further my research.
