Zimmermann-Monkemeier or Menkemeyer Family

Hello,

I am researching my husband's family. They left Germany in 1856 from the
port of Bremen on the ship Elsie. The family consisted of Heinrich
Zimmermann age 43 - occupation farmer, his wife Wilhelmina born a Monkemeier
or Menkemeyer and three children. Heinrich Jr., age 8, Wilhelmina age 6,
and Frederick age 2 years. Their final destination was listed as Wisconsin
and he later filed naturalization papers renouncing the Kingdom of Hannover.

On later US Census records they claim Hanover as the city of their birth.
They practiced the Evangelical faith in America.

I wrote to the Auswanders Information Center but they could not give me any
further information.

If any one can help or direct me to where I can find more information it
would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Nancy,

pls.note, when people arrived in USA and the said, where they come from
"Hannover", they do not mean the today Capital City of Lower Saxony,
Hannover.
In 99% the ment the Kingdom of Hannover, today part of the Lower
Saxony.

Mönklemeyer ist very common in the area of county HOLZMINDEN along the
Weser river, where my own ancestries MÖNCKEMEYER lived, back to 1550,
today still present there.
Best regards
