Good morning,
I am trying to locate the hometown of Heinrich Zimmermann and his wife Wilhelmina Monkemeyer and their family which left from Bremen on the ship Bark Elsie for the United States in 1857 with three children, Heinrich age 8, Wilhelmina age 6 and Friedrich age 2 years, arriving in New York on May 7, 1857. They listed their final destination as Wisconsin.
Heinrich was born was born on September 14, 1812 in Hannover, Germany. Wilhemina was born on April 3, 1822.
I have found several different spellings of Wilhelmina's maiden name. I believe it was orginally spelled with an umlaut over the o. I have also seen, Moenkemeier, Moenckemeyer and other combinations.
She was the mother of 14 children only three of which survived to become adults. The older two children who came over from Germany did not survive and the last two surving children were born in Wisconsin.
On Heinrich's declaration of intent to become a citizen he relinquished his citizenship of the Kingdom of Hannover.
Other Monkemeyers that I have found list Brille, Reilefzen or Polle as their birth places. So far I have not found a connection to them
These were my husband's great grand parents.
Any direction you can give me is greatly appreciated.
Nancy Zimmermann
