Zelle

In very old letters where the people were writing mosly in Latin you will find the current town of Celle refered to a Zelle.
Jim

Hi Jim,
Yes you are quite correct in this. Also the names of people were latinised in the 17/1800s.
As I have been doing my family tree going from Ireland, to India, to Ceylon etc I found that the names of people are also latinised. ie Jacob = Jacobus, Adrian= Adrianus, Cornelis= Cornelius, Jeremy=Jeremiah and so forth.
I have now located CELLE in HANNOVER.
Thank you for your input, all info helps to get to the bottom of things.

Hello Maryjane,
I did not follow this thread from the very beginning, but Celle near Hannover was written Zelle at least until the 19th century.
Celle was the "capital" of the duchy of Lueneburg-Celle until 1705, when the duchy was merged with the electorate of Hannover; the daughter of the last duke of Celle became the first (and later divorced) wife of the later George I. of England.
After the Napolean wars the electorate of Hannover was transformed to the Kingdom of Hannover, which was in existance until 1866 when there was a "unfriendly" takeover by Prussia after the war between Prussia and Austria.
So from 1866 on Celle was situated in Prussia, province Hannover.
What may be of more interest to you: there used to be a pediatric doctor who practiced in Celle until some years ago, Dr. Hans-Joachim Andree. I do not know him, I do not know if he is well - he must be in his 70-80s, and I do not know if his family is from Celle, but he is listed in the telephone directory with this adress: Wittinger Str. 210, D-29223 Celle, Tel. 05141 3 27 07, so you can perhaps contact him and find out yourself.
A second idea: ANDREÉ may be of french origin, and there was significant immigration to Celle at the end of the 17th century by huguenottes from France.

Greetings from Celle

Is it possible he was assigned to different military posts in different parts of Ceylon? If someone had saved a letter from him at one post, the descending family members may have thought that he was at that one post the entire time. But maybe he mustered out and moved to another part of the country. It would be good to get his military record and see his assignments and dates, Mary Jane.
