Thanks to everyone for the explanation of the name Brink and its various
occupational forms.
My question is on birth records. Do old German churches, Catholic in
particular, in the Hannover region have such records going back as far as 1820? If so,
how hard would it be for me to access those records, and how should I go
about it?
I'm looking for a record of Johann Bernhardt Wulf's birth in the Kingdom of
Hannover. There is some evidence that his father may have been named Johann as
well.
Thanks for any help.

Hello Linda,
That is not hard,
Either you go to Osnabrueck and read the microfiches of
the catholic diocese there
or you go to Hildesheim to do that for their diocese
(left or east of the river Weser, while Osnabrck care for
living and dead catholics west of the river Weser.
The Osnabrueck diocese web address is

Hello,
Yes, the Catholic church records go back as far as late 1500's, some
later. Sometimes the LDS has the church records you may need. However, you
can't get very far unless you have the town of Johann Bernhardt Wulf's
birth. Wulf is a very common name. Was he commonly called Johann or
Bernard in this country? Some Catholic families have the name of John as
the first name of all their sons. Bernard is very common in the area where
I have ancestors, but you are going to have to do everything to find his
place of birth. Have you checked all church records, naturalization
records, bibles, anything where his birthplace may be mentioned? On census
records, is he usually listed as from Hannover? And do you have a precise
birth date (or nearly so)? This is not an easy task without the place of
birth!

Your notice Catholic let me check the emigration book of former Kreis (like county) Lingen. This is a catholic area in the former Kingdom of Hannover, close to the Netherland border.
This book listed 4 Wulf and 3 Brinkmann, but not Johann Bernhardt Wulf:
- Wulf parish Thuine
- Brinkmann parish Bawinkel
You should check this church books by LDS
Good luck,
Werner
It's not hard to view church records if you live in Germany--or have lots of
time when you visit!
