Wilhelm Mueller

My g-grandfather, Wilhelm Mueller, born 2 Feb 1851,
immigrated to the US from Hannover when he was 14
years old. He was married in Mokena, Illinois on, 4
Dec 1874 where his birthplace was recorded as,
"Nelzingen, Aust. Medingen, Hanover",in the Church
records. Later his last name was recorded as Muller in
a German Lutheran Church in Nebraska but in civil
records he used the name, William Miller. His obituary
in 1924 listed, Melzinger, Hanover, Germany, as his
birthplace. There was no mention of any other family
members.
I would like to identify his German birthplace.

Hello Cliff,

that's "Melzingen", about 10 km northwest of Uelzen, in the former "Amt Medingen" of the former Kingdom of Hannover.

Thanks, Where would I search to find his birth record and the names of his parents? His family name may have been Muller.

Hi Cliff:

The closest, about 3 k, town of any size is Ebstorf. There are apparently a couple of churches there and one was probably the parish which serviced Melzingen. I see no LDS records for Ebstorf, so that is of no help. If you can find a way of getting help in that area, you will probably find something relevant.

Remember, that if you spell the name,Muller, to use the umlaut.

There's a researcher in Uelzen, not far from Ebstorf, who might be able to help you. His name is Dieter Boe. Boe-Uelzen@t-online.de

He has church records from many of the towns around Uelzen.

He has helped me in the past with Ebstorf records. His prices are reasonable.
