Where is Hesse Cassel?

I am researching my Steffens ancestors who were from the village of Spieka, but am confused about the birth place of my ggrandmother. Her birth name was Catherina Margaretha Rebecca Schuhardt and she married Frederick Steffens while still in Germany about 1851. A person of interest, possibly Catharina's brother, whose name is Johann Schuhardt has shown up in the 1860 Illinois census. On this census the enumerator wrote Johann's place of birth as "Hesse Cassel". Is anyone familiar with this location? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

You can print out a map of Germany, It seems to be in abt. the middle of the
map.
