Good evening, folks,
well, to answer my own question, there are lots of NEWS
in the ships department.
Our transcribers are 'churning' out lots of passengerlists
and they and the proofreaders deserve a big 'THANK YOU' !!
They all work quietly in the background for the benefit of
all of us. However, there are still 'zillions' of lists not
transcribed yet and we are constantly looking for more
volunteers.
To talk about me, I try to update our databases and bring them
up to the highest technical standards constantly.
The latest changes with our ships database
http://www.saxonyroots.com/ships
With now well over 100,000 names in our database it can be
quite a bit time-consuming to search through all the records,
but now you can now narrow down your search with entering
any amount of letters into the 'First Name' box...
Very often, you do not know the exact spelling of the Last Name.
But now you have the option to search for similar sounding names
with clicking on the 'YES' button...
When you start looking for the actual data like:
http://www.saxonyroots.com/ships/ships_db.php
you usually get quite a few 'hits' and until now you were only
able to move forward one page at the time.. but now you can
select any page you want to visit on the bottom of the page...
And another thing I find very exciting.. our database is now
linked to 'google maps' and whenever you 'click' on a placename
you will see the actual landscape and in zooming in, you can go
down to the 'street level' and can see even the individual
buildings as it looks from space.... amazing...
I am still not to happy with the display and all the advertising.
It's a minor thing.. anyone having any knowlege with JAVA and able
to give me a hand to solve this problem ??
OK.. enough talk for today...
Take a look and let me know your opinion and, of course,
if you find any 'boo-boos' tell me abot them..
Have a nice evening,
Wolf [Zscheile]
